Greetings from the Secondary Principal!

RAS is an International School with a rich & vibrant history and we continue to build upon the great foundations that our alumni students, parents and staff have established.

We are very excited about the wonderful challenges and opportunities that we will encounter throughout the coming school year.

Our guiding statements will drive all decision making within the Secondary school. In particular our Profile of Graduates outline very key attributes that we will continually be striving to develop within our students and entire learning community.

At the foundation of this effort is our Pastoral Care structure that ensures every student is part of a smaller cohort guided by a mentor teacher who has daily contact with those students and works with them in a pro-active manner to set the stage for student success in all aspects of their learning.

We have a great many opportunities for our students both at MS and HS and as our students grow in their skills and attitudes it is our aim that all of them will ultimately be able to participate in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB-DP) in some manner in their final years at RAS.

We have many families joining our community from all parts of the world and many who ultimately end up leaving us to join other schools around the globe. This movement is both exciting and challenging. The cross fertilization of ideas that comes with this migration helps us to continually incubate and grow new ways of improving teaching and learning. This movement also means that we need to ensure that our systems will best support students to make these moves successfully – we continually work to recognize and meet this challenge.

It is our hope that you will find RAS Secondary School a warm and inviting learning community. We look forward to you joining RAS and sharing in all that our vibrant learning community has to offer. I look forward to greeting you on campus.

Very Best Wishes,

Paul Sebastian

Secondary School Principal

Middle School
Grades Six, Seven and Eight

The life of the school has its foundations in the liberal arts approach to education, which offers students the opportunity to explore and learn in all of the academic disciplines as well as the arts..

We seek to educate the whole child, and encourage participation in extracurricular activities such as team and individual sports, visual and performing arts and community service. Our students learn responsible citizenship by actively participating in the governance of the school as members of the student government and strategic planning committees.

In the Middle School, our goal is to recognize and respond to the unique needs of early adolescent students. We seek to do this by:
  • Cultivating the spirit of discovery through activity-oriented instruction that encourages deep understanding.
  • Promoting the desire to learn, the awareness that learning is a lifelong process, and the recognition that there is a wide variety of resources for learning.
  • Encouraging a spirit of community among students, parents and faculty that fosters commitment to service, concern and respect for the environment and the celebration of cultural diversity.
  • Providing opportunities for students to explore their interests independently and collaboratively both in and out of the classroom.
  • Assisting students, while in this transition period, to understand their own needs, decisions, attitudes, and behaviors.
  • Providing opportunities for students to acquire an understanding and appreciation of Morocco.
  • Helping students develop the capacity to live as independent, self-motivated adults by encouraging self-discipline and independent work habits and providing opportunities for increasing responsibility.
  • Helping each student maintain a positive self-concept and the willingness to engage in constructive self-criticism.

Student Support
All Secondary School Grades

The Counseling and Guidance Program is committed to providing a safe supportive environment.

Where all students have the opportunity to realize their worth, strive for personal and academic excellence, and create global harmony.

In the secondary school, guidance and counseling is provided to all students through whole class lessons, small group meetings, or individually.

Providing support to parents and collaborating with both parents and teachers is another important aspect of the program. Advisory is coordinated through the counseling center. The advisory system is at the heart of the development of the whole child at RAS secondary school. Middle school advisory is focused on developmental issues and helping students adjust to secondary school while high school advisory is more future oriented in helping students track their credits, and explore career and college options. Both groups focus on decision-making and cooperation skills.

College Counseling is provided to all students in grades 9-12.

The beginning process, grades 9 and 10, is to explore post high school options in both career and academic settings. Grade 11 students are guided through an intensive college search in preparation for the college application process. Grade 12 students are assisted with their college applications for universities in the US, UK, Canada and a variety of other countries.

Student Learning Support is coordinated through the Student Support Team (SST).

Members of the team are the Principal, Secondary Counselor, Secondary Resource Teacher, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) faculty. Other teaching staff is included as appropriate. The SST meets as needed to review student referrals made by parents, classroom teachers, or specialists. The team’s objective is to identify and meet individual needs through one of several intervention options. These include planning with the classroom teacher to differentiate instruction for more advanced or struggling learners; pull-out groups for ESOL or Learning Support; “inclusion” during core subjects, where the specialist works with students and teachers in the classroom.
